The Appomattox County Rescue Squad was established in 1961 as a non-profit all volunteer organizaiton to provide emergency medical care to the people in the Appomattox area.  Members provide emergency medical services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to the 345 square mile area surrounding Appomattox.  The team consists of 35 members, with 18 of them trained in advanced life support.  The Captain of the Appomattox Rescue Squad is Mike Johnson.  The squad has three ambulances, one crash truck, two boats and a nine bay facility with a large meeting and training area.  The squad answers over 1200 calls annually. Today the squad still depends on donations from the community and is still a totally volunteer agency.

Striking in it's simplicity, yet diverse in it's meaning, the Appomattox County Rescue Squad Patch is an outstanding example of fine artistry and high ideals. It represents the proud tradition of service to our fellow man. The handshake of the opposing Generals of the Civil War provides the central theme for this patch. The design was originated by Betty Rhodenizer and it was chosen from several designs submitted for its illusion to the ideas of friendship and service, as well as the historical significance it conveys.
