Reenactors in period costumes pole their batteau down the James River. Each year 15 to 20 boats and their crews float the river 120 miles from Lynchburg to Richmond. This is a moving festival which lasts for 8 days. Visitors can see period encampments, listen to old time fiddle music or visit the many craftsmen that follow the festival. This festival is a recreation of the cargo boats and their crews which moved all of the heavy cargo before the time of railroads or canals (circa 1771 - 1836). Please contact the Chamber of Commerce for more information and dates and locations of the festivals.
