APPOMATTOX COUNTY RECREATION AND HERITAGE TRAIL POSSIBILITY

A group of interested citizens, the Town, the County, and conservation recreation enthusiasts have been meeting to discuss the possibility of developing a system of hiking and biking trails within the County that would link to the National Historical Park, the new Appomattox Community Park and the Town of Appomattox through a system of paved and unpaved trails.

To assist in developing a vision, the County has been awarded a Technical Assistance Grant through the National Park Serice, River, Trails and Technical Assistance Program.

We need input from local residents on identifying and prioritizing opportunities for trails, walkable sidewalks, and other alternative transportation corridors. An Appomattox Trail Survey has been created for residents to give their feedback o the project. Copies of the survey are available a the Appomattox Recreation Department, the County Administrators office, the Town office, Library and on the web at www.region2000.org

In addition to the survey, two public forums will be held to give residents an overview of the Appomattox Heritage and Recreational Trail Project and to get input and suggestions from citizens. The forums will be Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at the Appomattox Community Center from 10:00am - 12:00 noon and a second session from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. For more information call Johnnie Roark, Appomattox County Planner at 352-8183 or Kelly Hictchcock at 845-3491.

COMMUNITY PARK UPDATE

We are in the process of reseeding the four baseball fields at the park because the grass did not come up very well. Dale Campbell has volunteered to do all of the work for free if we pay for the seed and fertilizer. The two tee-ball fields seem to be in good shape although the infields need some work. We hope to over seed the soccer fields this Fall. We are in desperate need of rain on all the fields.

The Town has volunteered to help us get our well operating so that we can water the fields after they are seeded. We are also looking into getting power run to the Park as well.

The Appomattox Girl Scouts are looking at the possibility of building a Play Ground at the Park. We would like to build a Pavilion so that the public and teams would have somewhere for picnics. We also need picnic tables built for the Park as well. If anyone knows of a club or individual that could help us with either of these two projects please call Anne Dixon or Gary Gilliam at 352-5996.
