LOCAL ECONOMY: Appomattox County has a comprehensive retail and service sector with total taxable retails sales in 1991 exceeding $48 million. Manufacturing activity is concentrated in textiles, furniture and forestry. The county has a civilian labor force of 5,475 with an unemployment rate of 4.4% (2000 census). Click here for census information. Agricultural production is concentrated in dairy products and beef cattle. There are more than 350 farms located in the county and beef cattle are raised on about two-thirds of them. There is an estimated 17,441 head of cattle in the county and also more than a dozen dairymen in the county that milk a total of 751 cows. There are several tobacco farms as well. Appomattox County famers grow 55 acres of fire-cured tobacco and 67 acres of flue-cured tobacco.
